Longtime Worker A Constant At Race Track

Posted: 5:48 pm EDT October 8, 2010

It's the second day of the NHRA Toyo Tires Nationals at the Maple Grove Raceway in Berks County and many faithful fans will recognize a familiar face. She won't be behind the wheel, but many will know just where to find her. That's because she's been there for almost half a century. Many who faithfully head to Maple Grove for the NHRA Toyo Tires Nationals will notice that the high-profile races may come and go. But there's one person who has been constant year after year. Kathy Phillips has been working the will call window for the last 45 years. "You get to have the same people every year, back each year, doing the same thing, wanting the same seats that they've had for 20 years," said Kathy Phillips. You can say, Kathy has grown up at Maple Grove. "My husband is addicted to racing also," said Kathy. "I met him here 25 years ago, and we're together." Kathy said she doesn't go to the track to see the races. She prefers to watch them in her booth on a monitor. "I can be more help out here with the people answering questions," said Kathy. And that's the way she likes it. We asked her whether 45 years in the will call window ever gets boring. "No," said Kathy. "Never, never." How many more years will Kathy be making sure fans get their tickets? She said she not sure. But what she does know, is that when the fans go home, she'll be here tomorrow. "I'm at the track every day," said Kathy. Copyright 2010 WFMZ. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
