Mayors Urge Gov. To Veto Cancer Presumption Bill
Posted: 5:11 pm EST November 23, 2010
Financial woes are driving mayors from 16 Pennsylvania communities to urge Governor Rendell to veto House Bill 1231. If signed, the bill, also called the "Cancer Presumption Bill," would allow any firefighter, hired or volunteer, to have health coverage if diagnosed with cancer. Firefighters said they are exposed to many cancer-causing chemicals. That's why some on the front line said the "Cancer Presumption Bill" is a good thing. "Thirty something states already have it," said Chief Robert Benner, Whitehall Fire Department. "I feel that Pennsylvania, which has a large amount of firefighters, especially volunteers, would certainly benefit from it." "The whole bill lacks common sense," said Mayor Sal Panto, (D) Easton. "It just shows you that Harrisburg and the legislature could care less about how much more money they shift from them to us." Panto is one of 16 mayors to sign a letter asking Rendell to veto the legislation. Allentown and Reading's mayors have also signed the letter. The bill would allow those fighting fires to file a claim while employed and up to six years after they retire, if they are diagnosed with cancer. "The whole bill puts the burden of proof on the municipalities that they didn't get cancer fighting a fire," said Panto. "Several years ago we had a trailer fire that was loaded with drums of chemical," said Benner. "There was numerous firefighters exposed as a result of the chemical." Panto said many cities are financially-strapped and this new expense will have to be dealt with some way. "All I know is I have a pot of money and if my revenues are here and my expenses are here, I'm not raising revenue to get to here," said Panto. "I'm lowering expenses to get to here." This bill passed by large margin in both the state House and Senate. Copyright 2010 WFMZ. All rights reserved. Waiting on the Creeper to show up in theaters again may literally take the 23 years it's supposed to in the film lore. We've heard production was starting but then MGM's trouble caused things to halt. We've heard the title of the film is going to be JEEPERS CREEPERS: Cathedral and we've heard it's going to be in 3D...
The one thing we haven't heard mention is when all this is exactly supposed to happen? Today, according to MovieInsider the film is slated for a release in 2011. September 16th to be exact. A lofty goal from a film that never seems to be able to get going full steam ahead.
What do we know about the "old west" storyline so far?
Plot Synopsis: The movie sets in a flashback in the old west, telling how The Creeper was introduced into Indian and cowboy folktales, then sets 23 years after the events of the original films where the story was left off. Trisha Jenner, who is now a successful woman and has a teenage son of her own named Darry (named after her late brother who was killed by The Creeper in Jeepers Creepers), has a recurring nightmare of her son suffering the same fate. So she sets out with Jack Taggart Sr. and Jack Taggart Jr. and some of the other characters from the past two films to end The Creeper's reign once and for all.
Victor Salva will be back in the directors seat and he promises a film that will focus on more of what the original film did. Less creature and more tension. Time will tell.

Test Drive Unlimited 2 Dated
Atari and Eden's Test Drive Unlimited 2 has been dated for February 8 in the US and February 11 across Europe.
An ambitious open world racer that follows in the tire tracks of its prequel, Test Drive Unlimited 2 takes the action to the sunny island of Ibiza – and brings a little of the local flavour with it.
It was originally scheduled for this September although its release was pushed back so Eden could get busy with the Turtle Wax and give it all a bit more polish.
An afternoon spent in its company earlier this month proved that it's made some improvements over its predecessor but still has some way to go if it wants to fulfil its promise – but we're remaining optimistic that its extended development period will help it make good ahead of the February release.
Final Debate Of Allentown Budget
Posted: 9:58 pm EST November 23, 2010Updated: 11:05 pm EST November 23, 2010
ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- WEB EXCLUSIVE -- After a lengthy discussion last week, Allentown city officials debated the proposed 2011 budget one last time Wednesday night. The city is staring down the possibility of a four-tenths of 1 percent increase in the earned income tax (EIT) to cover the gap in next year's budget. The EIT is levied on salaries, wages, commissions and other compensation paid to employees in the city. For an employee making $50,000 per year, that would cost an additional $200 in taxes. The new EIT rate would be 1.4 percent. City Council members questioned City Finance Director Garret Strathearn about the decrease in available money in both the city's risk management and cash reserve funds and whether or not that would affect the city's bond rating. The available money for risk management in 2011 is $491,000. In 2007, the city had more than $6.7 million in the same fund. "We're trying to get to the bottom of this," said Council President Michael D'Amore. "Things that we as a council have been told over the years haven't always been right and now we're seeing even less money in these funds." According to D'Amore, the city borrowed $10 million in 2006 to help its bond rating and have money to use on capital projects. Strathearn said that despite the difficult economic times, the city is still doing well in the eyes of lenders. "We're in decent shape," said Strathearn. "Lenders look at whether or not you can pay your bills. And with a lot of these capital projects there aren't a whole lot of other alternatives than what we have here." Council members were more worried about the negative trend they're seeing in several funds. "When you look at most of these funds, the numbers continue to go down," said Councilman Mike Schlossberg. "While there are some that are going up, the majority are declining and we've lost nearly $7 million in the risk management fund. Not only does that hurt the fund, but wouldn't that hurt our rating as well?" Councilman Julio Guridy said the city currently has a bond rating of BBB+. "This is a fragile situation especially in light of the tough economic times," said Strathearn. "Based on other cities like Allentown, I'd have to say we're holding our own." Strathearn said that the city's outlook as reported by financial firms is currently neutral, down from a previous positive rating. He reiterated several times, however, that the city's rating did not go down. Allentown City Council has set the vote on its 2011 proposed and amended budget for Wednesday December 1 at 7:30 p.m. in City Hall. Copyright 2010 WFMZ. All rights reserved. We announced just a week ago that Universal's THE THING prequel was in set back mode as the original release date (April 29th, 2011) was taken off the schedule. We were left with a huge question mark as to when the prequel would see the light of day. Today we the answer and the date is an interesting one...
Universal has smartly put the film in the countdown to Halloween slot of October, 14, 2011. Of course horror films tend to do better during that time of the month and studios are finally starting to realize that. The only problem here is Universal's putting a lot on the line because it will be competing with other horror film releases during the month of October. The already established phoneme PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 is due out October 21 and the highly anticipated DIBBUK BOX is coming in on the 28th. A jam packed lineup and a month that will surely see even more action as we get closer to the date.
This does tell us that Universal at they very least believes they are sitting on a good film here or they wouldn't put it up against such heavy competition. Time will tell and fans of the John Carpenter original will wait in skepticism but with hope they are right. As always stay tuned for more news as we get it.
